Pawley's IslandPawley's Island, considered "arrogantly shabby" by many residents, is home to beautiful beaches and enchanting tide lands that attract many retirees and vacationers each year. The island once used primarily for leisure homes in the 1700s is now home to slightly over 200 permanent residents, an increasing number of them retirees. The surrounding area of Waccamaw Neck is home to a larger population of 14,000.
Adults searching for a relaxing atmosphere with mild climates and the convenience of a larger town find Pawley's Island to be just what they are searching for. The Grand Strand averages 64.8º year-round and the Atlantic stays a warm 66º. This mild climate allows residents to enjoy outdoor activities throughout the year. Popular island activities include fishing, swimming, crabbing, golf, tennis, shrimping, surfing, hunting, boating and bird watching. Residents also enjoy nearby art galleries, museums, historic sites, performing arts and plantations. Pawley's Island Golf and Country Club provides numerous recreation opportunities for residents. The island, located along Waccamaw Neck on the Grand Strand, also has five nearby rivers in addition to long stretches of beaches. Most of the houses on Pawley's Island are resort oceanfront homes that rarely go on the market. However, there are rental opportunities available. A 1,200 to 2,000 square foot home on the island begins at $100,000 and increases in proximity to the coast. Residents pay approximately $916 in property taxes on their homes. This figure is based on the state average of 229 mills. Retirees can benefit from several tax breaks under the Homestead Exemption Tax. This exempts adults over 65 who have lived in state for at least a year from paying school, municipal and county taxes on the first $20,000 of their homes. Home owner's insurance varies depending on the distance to the coast and the amount of coverage. Residents pay a minimum of $465 in insurance. This figure excludes flood, hurricane and earthquake coverage. Retirees are also eligible to receive income tax deductions of $3,000. This deduction increases to $10,000 after adults turn 65. The maximum income tax rate is 7% on the income over $11,400. Social Security benefits are not taxed. For more information on housing and retirement in Pawley's Island, contact:
